- How to start a wiki, from Wikibooks, a quick guide to starting your own wiki
- Wikipatterns by Stewart Mader (2007, Wiley). ISBN 0470223626. Book about once you've got a wiki, how do you make it work? These are some ideas and patterns for making wikis work.
- The Wiki Way: Quick Collaboration on the Web by Bo Leuf and Ward Cunningham. (2001, Addison-Wesley). ISBN 978-0201714999. This original book about wikis is now dated technologically, but still offers good ideas about collaboration and how wiki software should be structured.
[edit] Wiki software
- wikimatrix.org, a site that compares wiki software
- comparison of software packages (if you want to install a wiki in your existing website)
- comparison of hosting services(if you want another company to host your wiki for you)
- key terms to search for: "wiki engine", "wiki software", "enterprise wiki", "hosted wiki"
[edit] Examples of hosted wikis and wiki software
- pbwiki -- a wiki company that offers free hosted wikis, good for small groups
- wikispaces -- a wiki company that offers hosted wikis, good for small groups or nonprofits
- Confluence -- Wiki software designed for companies
- Socialtext -- Wiki software designed for companies
- Research papers
- Both Socialtext and Confluence offer for-fee hosted wikis or wiki software that can be downloaded for a fee. Good for large, secure installations.
- Wikipedia is possibly the best-known use of a wiki, but it is far from the only possibility. However, the software that Wikipedia uses (MediaWiki) is widely adopted outside of Wikipedia.
- The generic help manual for MediaWiki sites
- Wikipedia's help pages -- For any MediaWiki based site, Wikipedia's help resources can be useful.
